Intr-o lume in care sunt inconjurate de imagini retusate cu fotomodele si actrite \u201eperfecte\u201d, haine marimea 36 si cele mai noi diete de slabit (care promit marea cu sarea), greutatea este un punct sensibil de fiecare data cand se apropie vara, pentru orice femeie insarcinata sau care tocmai a devenit mama, dupa 35-40 de ani (cand descoperi ca nu mai scapi atat de usor de acele 2-3 kg in plus) si de fiecare data cand iti imaginezi cum ai arata intr-o rochie din vitrina magazinelor&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">O modalitate de a calma \u201edemonii\u201d care guverneaza greutatea ideala este un calculator de greutate, iar Internetul este plin de site-uri care contin un calculator IMC (cum este si cel de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omnicalculator.com\/health\/bmi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">aici<\/a>). Indicele de masa corporala\/IMC (numit, in engleza, \u201eBody Mass Index\u201d\/BMI) este o valoare derivata din raportul intre greutatea si inaltimea unei persoane, este exprimat in kg\/m<sup>2 <\/sup>si o poate incadra pe aceasta in categoriile subnutrita (indice de masa corporala sub 18,5), greutate normala (indice de masa corporala de 18,5-25), supraponderala (indice de masa corporala de 25-30) sau obeza (indice de masa corporala peste 30). Folosit de cativa zeci de ani incoace ca punct de referinta pentru sanatatea individuala, acest calcul IMC nu a fost niciodata menit sa faca asta. Acesta a fost un astronom, matematician, statistician si sociolog belgian, care si-a propus sa identifice ce caracterizeaza \u201el\u2019homme moyen\u201d (in traducere \u201eomul obisnuit\u201d) si astfel a dezvoltat ideea de \u201efizica sociala\u201d, intre 1830 si 1850. Quetelet nu avea studii de medicina, dar credea ca poate defini matematic omul obisnuit (vazut de el drept ideal) si a inventat aceasta formula (inaltime in kg\/greutate in m<sup>2<\/sup>) in urma masuratorilor facute exclusiv pe subiecti francezi si scotieni.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14801 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sanovita.ro\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/greutate.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"615\" height=\"392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.sanovita.ro\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/greutate.jpg 615w, https:\/\/beta.sanovita.ro\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/greutate-324x207.jpg 324w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 615px) 100vw, 615px\" \/>Stiinta a fost adesea folosita drept justificare pentru creionarea de idei si punerea in practica de politici sociale rasiste. Iar Quetelet nu face exceptie: si-a publicat studiile in Europa de Vest, la inceput de secol XIX (perioada de varf pentru stiinta rasista), este co-fondatorul scolii de criminologie pozitivista (care spune ca factorii sociali predispun oamenii la crima si care l-a inspirat pe Cesare Lombroso, \u201eparintele criminologiei\u201d, sa decreteze ca persoanele de culoare sunt salbatice si criminale din nastere, avand caracteristici fizice asemanatoare primatelor).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Numit initital \u201eindexul lui Quetelet\u201d, BMI-ul a ajuns sa fie folosit \u2013 un secol mai tarziu \u2013 ca masuratoare a abilitatii de a-ti creste bine copilul si ca justificare stiintifica a eugeniei, sterilizarea sistematica a persoanelor cu dizabilitati, a imigrantilor, a saracilor si a persoanelor de culoare.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">De la indexul lui Quetelet, la BMI<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14994 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sanovita.ro\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/medic.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.sanovita.ro\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/medic.jpg 696w, https:\/\/beta.sanovita.ro\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/medic-324x182.jpg 324w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" \/>La inceputul secolului XX, companiile de asigurari de viata americane au inceput sa utilizeze tabele cu inaltimi si greutati umane, pentru a determina ce tarife sa ceara clientilor. Desi aceste tabele erau inexacte (contineau cifre auto-raportate, nu luau in considerare varsta asiguratului, iar companiile nu aveau medici printre angajati, ci agenti de vanzari), tabelele au inceput sa fie utilizate de doctori in anii \u201950 si \u201960, pentru a evalua sanatatea pacientilor proprii. In 1970, cercetatorii cautau o metoda mai eficienta de evaluare si asa a aparut termenul modern \u201eindice de masa corporala\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Intr-o lucrare publicata in numarul din iulie 1972 al \u201eJournal of Chronic Diseases\u201d, Ancel Keys si colegii sai analizau 7.500 de barbati din 5 tari diferite (SUA, Finlanda, Italia, Japonia, Africa de Sud), notau ca rezultatele nu se aplica persoanelor de culoare, veneau cu denumirea de BMI, numindu-ul un indicator \u201edaca nu complet satisfacator, macar la fel de bun ca orice alt indice de greutate relativa care pote fi folosit ca indicator al obezitatii\u201d. Dar mentionau ca un calculator IMC ar fi util pentru studii legate de populatie, in niciun caz pentru evaluari individuale.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">Alternative la indicele de masa corporala<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14995 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sanovita.ro\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/circumferinta-talie.jpg\" alt=\"circumferinta talie\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/beta.sanovita.ro\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/circumferinta-talie.jpg 696w, https:\/\/beta.sanovita.ro\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/circumferinta-talie-324x182.jpg 324w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" \/>Cu toate acestea, deoarece este atat de simplu, acest calcul IMC a ajuns sa fie utilizat de catre medici pentru diagnosticul preliminar, fiind apreciat pentru faptul ca poate prezice obezitatea in 50% dintre cazuri timp de ani buni (in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2886596\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2011<\/a>, de exemplu, \u201eJournal of Obstetrics and Gynecology\u201d nota ca IMC-ul a detectat obezitatea in cazul a sub 50% dintre pacientele de culoare, albe si hispanice). Indicele de masa corporala este limitat deoarece nu ia in considerare diferitele forme ale corpului care nu rezulta din grasimea in exces si nu face diferenta intre muschi si grasime (primii fiind mai grei). De accea, sportivii pot avea un BMI mai mare, iar femeile de culoare cu un indice de masa corporala mai mare sau egal cu 30 si o talie mai mare sau egala cu 91 cm sunt considerate sanatoase (in timp ce femeile albe au risc crescut de diabet, conform unui studiu din <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1038\/oby.2010.319\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2011<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In ultimii, discutia depre greutatea ideala s-a nuantat: cercetatorii in domeniu vorbesc despre\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/news\/obesity\/there-are-six-different-types-of-obesity-study-argues\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">6 tipuri diferite de obezitate<\/a> (fiecare necesitand un tratament diferit), in timp ce alte voci <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/12\/12\/health\/weight-loss-obesity.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">au observat 59 de tipologii diferite<\/a>.
