Acolo a descoperit ca multe din bolile cu care se confrunta populatia europeana si cea americana nu se regaseau printre bolie de care suferea populatia africana. Printre aceste boli se numara: boala coronariana, diabetul zaharat, obezitatea, diverticuloza, apendicita, calculii biliari, hemoroizii, hernia hiatala si constipatia. \u201eIn 20 de ani de chirurgie in Africa, am facut o singura operatie de indepartare a unui calcul biliar\u201d, sustine dr. Burkitt.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In timp ce se afla in Uganda, dr. Burkitt a observat ca pacientii sai africani produceau mai multe fecale decat cei din tarile mai dezvoltate. Scaunul lor era mai moale si putea fi eliminat fara prea mult disconfort. In schimb, pacientii sai europeni aveau tendinta de a se forta in momentul in care eliminau fecalele, cantitatea lor fiind mai mica si compozitia mai tare. Pe masura ce se gandea la aceasta comparatie, a inceput sa se intrebe cat dureaza ca mancarea sa treaca prin sistemul digestiv al unui adult african.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Astfel, a inceput un experiment. Acesta le-a cerut pacientilor sai africani sa manance cateva fructe de padure rosii si i-a avertizat ca scaunul lor va fi de culoare rosie, rugandu-i sa il anunte atunci cand observa acest lucru. Dr. Burkitt se astepta ca acestia sa il anunte in trei pana la cinci zile, aceasta fiind perioada normala a tranzitului intestinal in cazul majoritatii pacientilor sai europeni. Mare i-a fost surpriza cand acestia au venit sa ii spuna, in doar 24 de ore, \u201eDr. Burkitt, dr. Burkitt, l-am gasit!\u201d. Alimentatia europenilor si a americanilor includea multa carne si carbohidrati procesati. Dr. Burkitt descria America drept o tara constipata si credea in teoria conform careia multe dintre bolile des intalnite in tarile dezvoltate, dar care nu puteau fi intalnite in Africa, sunt cauzate de regimul alimentar.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bazandu-se pe aceste convingeri, dr. Burkitt a pornit o campanie mondiala pentru cresterea consumului de fibre de origine vegetala. Din acel moment invatam permanent ca fibrele sunt destul de complexe. Exista un numar foarte mare de diverse substante care sunt considerate a fi fibre. Nu toate tipurile de fibre de care avem nevoie se regasesc in suplimentele alimentare, de aceea este important sa consumam fibre din alimente.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"td_quote_box td_box_center\">\n<blockquote class=\"td_pull_quote td_pull_center\"><p><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Atunci cand ai scaune mici, ai spitale mari. Cand ai scaune mari, vei avea spitale mici. Acum stim ca fibrele contin un numar impresionant de substante, unele solubile, altele insolubile iar altele sub forma de amidon rezistent. Unele actioneaza ca o matura, altele ca un burete si altele ca un gel. Unele ofera consistenta fecalelor, altele influenteaza dezvoltarea bacteriilor benefice in colon, contribuind astfel la buna functionare a sistemului imunitar.<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>Consumul multor fibre, impreuna cu o cantitate corespunzatoare de apa, sustine starea de sanatate.<\/li>\n<li>Fibrele previn constipatia si diminueaza presiunea din peretii colonului, reducand astfel riscul aparitiei diverticulitei.<\/li>\n<li>Fibrele solubile sunt eficiente in scaderea colesterolului rau din sange si in mentinerea nivelului de glucoza din sange.<\/li>\n<li>Fibrele sub forma de amidon rezistent participa la producerea bacteriilor benefice pentru organism si sustin sanatatea sistemului digestiv.<\/li>\n<li>Consumul unei mari varietati de alimente vegetale asigura nivelul optim de fibre in organism.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">Alegeri cu privire la stilul de viata<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Fibrele din dieta provin numai din plante. Carnea, lactatele sau ouale nu contin fibre. Atunci cand graul este transformat in faina alba, o parte insemnata dintre nutrienti, precum vitaminele sau mineralele se pierd, dar si 90% din fibre sunt inlaturate. O crestere brusca a consumului de fibre poate duce la balonare, care poate fi stanjenitoare dar si dureroasa. Incearca sa consumi in jur de 30 de grame de fibre pe zi. Asigura-te ca bei doza zilnica recomandata de 8 pahare de apa pe zi si incearca sa faci mai multe exercitii fizice in natura.
